Has anyone found a way to "envelope" budget

Post by lzeitler100 »

I feel that the current budgeting categories allow me to specify what I would spend in a month and compare it to actual expenses, which is nice.
But, is there any way to simulate an "envelope" system, or basically setting aside savings for a bigger purchase like a vacation and only taking that vacation when the budgeted amount is enough? I feel that I can set the budget report by categories to "all dates" and look at which categories are positive in value, however it would be nice to see how that impacts the bottom line if I chose to spend the entire amount. Almost like if there were a way to design a report to look at the total in all accounts if all budgeted money was spent entirely.

You could setup a separate account for the "envelope" and transfer money into it as needed until you are ready to spend it, then deduct it from the account when you actually spend it.

I was thinking of doing this, but it would affect my ability to reconcile the account that I transferred it out of since the balance wouldn't match anymore.

Well, but in a traditional envelope budgetting system, the money is not in a bank account, it is cash in the envelope. So you can create a separate "account" in AceMoney to represent each envelope you want, where money is deducted from the bank account, just like a real envelope.
