Sounds like the Account you are adding the transaction to is set to use USD instead of AUD. This is especially evident by the text of the amount box in the transaction dialog. If it says "Amount, USD" then the Account is set to USD. If it says "Amount, AUD" then the Account is set to use AUD. You can set the currency in the Account properties. All transactions in an Account use the Account's configured currency.
