Newbie question - using two computers via dropbox

Post by divinemsk »

I have searched through the boards (and both the AM and Dropbox websites) and just cannot find the info I'm looking so please forgive me if this has been covered. I've only recently started using AM (after years of frustration with Quicken and abysmal Intuit customer service) and while AM is not as sexy, it is solid and does the job.

I now need to be able to access my AM file from two computers - one a desktop machine running Windows enterprise and the other a laptop running 8.1. The desktop version of Dropbox is installed on each computer. Both computers have a their own copy of AM (although the laptop is still running the full 30-day trial). The AM file in question was created on the desktop machine and has been uploaded to a folder on Dropbox and Dropbox has successfully created and synced the folders on both computers. Both copies of AM have the allow multiple users checked in the software settings. Both have the same password. (for reasons not worth going into remote access and network sharing are not options).

THE PROBLEM: When I attempted to open the AM file on the local dropbox file on the lap top I received the following message: "This file was created on a different computer with a high security level. To share this file with another user, it needs to be re-saved on the orginal computer with the "Permit access by multiple users" option enabled in the Set Password settings". I thought I had done that... in fact after I received this error message the first time I went back to the desktop machine and re-enabled sharing... but either I'm not doing it correctly or something is not set correctly.

Any guidance you can provide will be extremely appreciated and most likely will overwhelm you with the benefits of good karma.

Thanks in advance - the Divine Ms. K

The password, and the multiple-users option, are both tied to the AMJ file, not to AceMoney itself. So you have to make sure the AMJ file has been loaded into AceMoney when you enable the multi-user option and assign a password. Then they will stick with the file as it moves from one PC to another. Changing the multi-user option, or the password, does not affect other AMJ files.

An AMJ file tells AceMoney which criteria are required to open it, whether that be a computer name, your AceMoney license, a password, etc. If the multi-user option is used, only a password is used. Otherwise, the trial version uses the local computer name and password, whereas the licensed version uses your AceMoney license and password instead. Your trial AceMoney on the laptop knows the AMJ file was not created using the laptop's computer name and password, and was not created with just a password by itself, so it must have been created on another PC with the multiple-user option turned off, so it displays the error message.

Was the AMJ file in question loaded in the desktop's AceMoney when you enabled the multi-user option on the Desktop? And did you re-sync the newly saved file back to the laptop afterwards?

Dear R. Lebeau,
You are an ACEMONEY God. I followed your instructions exactly and voila! :D I wish that the AM website had as clear as explanation as the one you provided to me. Please stand back from the computer and wait for your good Karma to spring forth.

Thank you again,
Kathy
