Subscribing to forum

Post by Peejay »

I have subscribed to the new forum and this is the info that I get when a new message is posted on the forum:

Hello Peejay,

You are receiving this notification because you are watching the forum,
"AceMoney for Windows" at "AceMoney Forums". This forum has received a new
topic since your last visit, "This forum needs advertising on your
website". You can use the following link to view the forum, no more
notifications will be sent until you visit the forum.

http://forums.mechcad.net/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

If you no longer wish to watch this forum you can either click the
"Unsubscribe forum" link found in the forum above, or by clicking the
following link:

Thanks,

While this is better than nothing, it would be better if it were possible to get a bit more info (preferably the text of the new post).

I do think however that this new forum will be an improvement over the old one, especially if the search function is really effective.

Julie suggested trying IFTTT, and I set up an account there earlier today.

IFTTT has just sent me the following email:

This seems to do exactly what I want - It gives me the name of the poster, the subject and the complete text of the post, just like the old Yahoo group.

Forums are really not set up very well for email linkage and that is not how they really meant to work anyway. They are really designed to be visited regularly by a 'community', and you do so as and when you get a free minute.

I just have an icon of any interesting forums on my Firefox bar and I visit them once a week or so to view any new posts.

But I suppose I am not interested in any forums that much anyway that I want to recieve emails from them. I find it starts getting to be a bit of a distraction when you start getting email notifications from forums, I prefer to have an empty email inbox and decide myself what I want to look at and when!

I did also say that this will only give you to content of the post if the board owners set up a new RSS feed that will actually get that content. The current RSS feed will just get the standard notifications, the same as the email notifications, so you don't gain anything by using the IFTTT recipe.
As demonstrated in Peejay's second post above, the AceMoney Forums RSS feed (forums.mechcad.net/feed.php) does provide the full content of each post.

In my feed reader (Mozilla Thunderbird 14), I do not check (tick) the option "By default show the article summary instead of loading the web page."

I use Thunderbird's "Message Filters" to automatically sort the forum posts into appropriate folders as they are received. Thunderbird is my primary email program, so I have AceMoney Forums and the AceMoney Yahoo Group together without resorting to third-party websites.

IFTTT looks interesting, however, so I may give it a try.

Julie

You said that from my second post "the AceMoney Forums RSS feed (forums.mechcad.net/feed.php) does provide the full content of each post", however that post is referring to the IFTTT notification.

The built in subscriptions on the forum give only a very basic message, with no details about the content of the post.

I also tried an RSS system, and this gave me a list of new posts since last checked. All this gave me was the heading of the post, however clicking on this opened the forum and took me to the relevant message.

Overall, of the three notifications, I think I prefer IFTTT

That depends on what RSS reader you use and how it is set up, the one I use can show either the headers or the full message (sometimes only part of the message dependant on the feed) then by clicking on the header I can go straight to the item like I have done now, and reply accordingly without opening a browser window.

The one I use is FeedDemon Pro but another good free one is RSSOwl

I thought, from reading Julie's posts, that IFTTT uses the RSS feed.

I am starting to think that the best way might be just to logon once a day and click on "View Unread Posts" after logging in
